What is the story on the 2″ x 4″ blue soft foam blocks noted in ‘Game Pieces’ on page 7 in KO Game Review? Where are they used?
Open Admin
June 29, 2018 — 2:04 pm
The 2″ x 4″ are only used in Challenge 1.

If there are six cube patterns in the six fan zones (two 3 cubes patterns, two 5 cube patterns, and two 7 cube patterns), that is 30 cubes, but here are only 20 cubes on the table. What don’t we understand?

Both 3 cube patterns are the same, both 5 cube are the same, and both 7 cube are the same. It was intentional that not every pattern may be able to be created twice and that teams would have to pick and choose which ones they wanted to do.

In challenge 2, how do you score points? Is there partial credit for less than the required number of cubes in a pattern?
Open Admin
June 29, 2018 — 2:09 pm
There is no partial credit for only getting part of the pattern. The whole pattern must be complete.

Please confirm KIPR Open dates are Challenge 1 on Thursday, Challenge 2 on Friday, Challenge 3 on Saturday. I can’t attend the whole conference and I want to pick the right dates for my flights.
Thanks,
Bill

All Challenges may be performed on any day and may be performed multiple times. When you come to the board you will tell the judge what Challenge you are doing and they will set up the game board for that Challenge.

Challenge clarifications needed
For all challenges – a scoring breakdown. Challenge 1 appears straightforward but in 2 and 3 not so. For example in challenge 2 if you get 4 out of 5 cubes right in the 5 cube pattern how does that score? Zero because the pattern wasn’t met? Partial score?
In challenge 2, could you post a picture of a pattern card? I think I understand the description but a visual sample would confirm it.
In challenge 3, is mounting of the turbine blades part of the setup time? Or is getting the blades onto the axle one of the tasks the robot must accomplish?
Could you define ” build their own turbine blades” – does it mean literally carving your own profiles? Can commercial model airplane/drone rotors be used?
Which direction is the axle oriented – horizontal or vertical?
Again a picture of the axle/Wallaby setup would help in understanding this challenge.

1. Yes correct zero points for not completing the pattern. In challenge 3 it is the number of rotations from all of your turbines and any multipliers from Botguy.
2. Yes we will post pictures of the game board and all the setups and pieces today or tomorrow.
3. Yes mounting the blades is part of setup time. They will be put on there before the game starts.
4. Turbine blades may be made from any material or you may use any pre-made ones as long as they fit on the axle.
5. Horizontal
6. We will post pictures of those too.

In challenge 3 – are we allowed only one turbine? Can we put blades on all 3? If so is the total blade count the sum of all or is just the highest one taken?
Open Admin
June 29, 2018 — 2:33 pm
You are allowed all 3 and all may have blades on them. The total spin count comes from the total of all turbine blades.

In challenge 3 is the axle free to rotate? Also is the Wallaby counting blades or just rotation of the axle?
Open Admin
July 3, 2018 — 3:28 pm
Yes the axel is free to rotate and the Wallabys are counting the number of rotations made from all turbines in the round.

In Challenge 2, could you post a picture of one or more patterns? Do you have to match the color of the pattern with similar cube colors?
Open Admin
July 10, 2018 — 3:34 pm
Yes the pattern will have to be color matched. Some examples will be uploaded.

July 12, 2018 — 2:51 am
Yes here are some more pictures of example patterns you might see. I’ve posted them above.

We plan to put turbine blades on a hub and mount the hub on the axle. Can blades be any length as long as they freely rotate?
Open Admin
July 6, 2018 — 9:18 pm
Yes they can be any length, just shorter than the height of the turbine obviously. We imagined that most people would mount a hub on the axle and then something to that.

In game 3, how will the counters know when to start and stop? Are they in sync with the start / stop lights?
Also, I’d like to propose a rule change for game 3 to end after 3 minutes instead of 5 minutes. I’m concerned there will be about 60-90 seconds of activity then 4 minutes of waiting while points accumulate. Aside from being a bit boring, it will hold up other teams waiting to take a turn at the table.

The counters will be reset at the start of each game. The fans are set to go on and off with the starting lights so at the end of the game the fans will turn off and once your blades have stopped moving we will score the points. I will propose the rule change to our design committee.
